Recovering from Your Implant Surgery and Taking Care of Your New Smile

Experts agree that implants are the most viable solution for replacing missing teeth.

Dental implants prove to be a reliable solution to restoring missing teeth as well as the ability to enjoy and chew food, support surrounding teeth, prevent bone loss. With the continuously improving advances in the techniques and technologies used in dental implant procedures, oral surgeons see a success rate of up to 97%. Implants also tend to be visually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

As implants require surgery, however, patients need to take measures to ensure the success of the procedure. Following the treatment, patients also need to care for their new smile in a slightly different manner.

Recovering from Your Implant Surgery

In the first few weeks following the surgery, you will need to make lifestyle changes to facilitate the healing of your dental implants. Here are some ways you can ensure full recovery and healing:

Eat soft food

It may take some time for the titanium in your implant fuses with the jawbone, and while the process takes place, you’ll want to avoid putting pressure on your implants. Eating soft food gives your implants the chance to heal and become fully sturdy.

If you’ve had implants on just one side of your mouth, use the other side to chew your food. Patients who have received full implants may be asked by their dentist to stay on a no-chew, liquid diet for at least four weeks before they move on to an extremely soft diet that may last three months.

Steer clear of strenuous activities

At least for a few weeks following your surgery, avoid engaging in strenuous physical activities or any form of contact sports. Waiting for the healing process to complete before engaging in extreme activities may help you dodge injuries that are likely to interfere with the binding of the implant and jawbone.

For certain individuals such as those whose profession requires engaging in intense physical activities, wait at least two days before performing strenuous exercises. Then, start out with low-impact exercises and slowly work your way into more rigorous activities. Watch out for signs that you’re doing too much, such as bleeding or throbbing. These are your cue to discontinue exercise and allow a few more days for healing.

Caring for Your Dental Implants

While you may care for your dental implants the way you would natural teeth, you’ll want to go beyond brushing and flossing to ensure implant health. You may consider investing in specific tools that can help you establish a more effective dental health routine. Some of the tools dentists recommend include an electric toothbrush, an interdental brush, an oral irrigator (also known as a water flosser or water pick), and protective appliances such as night guards.
